Notes: The idea for this tivaivai was conceived shortly before a hurricane struck Atiu. After the hurricane had passed without much damage, when looking at the tivaivai, similarities with a cyclone were discovered. The sun shone in the centre of this turning storm and for a short time there was the illusion of a happy world free of worries, before the attention had to return to things racing in vicious circles.

Notes: The beautiful Bauhinia tree with its split leaves and orchid-like flowers inspired this design. Notes: The title of this tivaivai is based on the Cook Islands legend of Ati Ve and the Momoke (woman from the underworld) who stole his taro. The traditional snowflake-style pattern is enhanced by insertions of contrasting colours to show the veins of the taro leaves. The tivaivai's binding repeats the inserted colours.

The traditional snowflake-style appliqué was used to create this stunning pattern, even though the symmetry slightly varies from the traditional four-fold way. Notes: Towards the end of the year, the Flamboyant trees with their flame-red flowers and lime green foliage display their radiant beauty. We couldn't resist to use this as inspiration for a tivaivai pattern. We also used crochet in addition to rich hand embroidery to accent the outline of the flowers.
